ABOUT ATOMIC JIU JITSU
There are many places on the web, better than here, to delve into the history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We assume that since you have found yourself at Atomic Jiu Jitsu, that you have at least a cursory understanding of what Jiu Jitsu is, its origins in Japan and how it made its way to Brazil where the Gracie family refined it and shared it with the world. So rather, hereunder you will learn about the foundations upon which Atomic Jiu Jitsu is built.
Atomic Jiu Jitsu is the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school located in Brisbane, Australia, of black belts Tim and Xan a husband-and-wife team who have been training and learning together for more than a decade.
Atomic Jiu Jitsu eschews the ad hoc teaching and learning of Jiu Jitsu but rather prefers that the art be taught cohesively adhering to Tim and Xan’s philosophy of Jiu Jitsu which is underpinned by –
1. Skill acquisition
2. Concepts in addition to individual techniques
3. The exchange of Jiu Jitsu between practitioners
4. Fun
Skill Acquisition
Live sparring/rolling should be about more than simply winning, when winning comes at the cost of attempting and honing new techniques to add to your arsenal. Atomic Jiu Jitsu views skill acquisition (outside of specific competition training camps and competition classes) as the top priority for live sparring/rolling. With skill acquisition as the core driver of live training, practitioners can continually expand their technique base.
Concepts in addition to individual techniques
Concepts are principled ideas. They are the basis upon which a practitioner can understand the interconnectivity of individual techniques, develop a strong framework within which their game works while understanding pathways back to their fundamental strengths when things go awry, and ultimately the foundation upon which a practitioner can grow and expand their game. Because once a concept is understood it can be deployed at will, in all conditions, even when the “steps” of a particular technique stumble.
In the absence of concepts or principled ideas underpinning the teaching of techniques, the ad hoc teaching of specific individual techniques does nothing to assist a practitioner in learning and understanding how that technique fits in Jiu Jitsu and can be likened to random individual jigsaw pieces.
The exchange of jiu jitsu between practitioners
Jiu Jitsu is not an individual sport. Without partners to train with your Jiu Jitsu cannot possibly reach its potential. Proper timing, pace, distance control, energy conservation and strength applied to a technique cannot successfully be learnt without training partners.
What this means at Atomic Jiu Jitsu is that live rolling is not about “not losing” and it is not about “winning by doing the same technique every single roll for years”.
Hand in hand with skill acquisition, the notion of exchanging Jiu Jitsu with your training partner challenges you to properly engage when rolling/sparring rather than, for example, lock someone down in your full guard so that they cannot move, you cannot move and no Jiu Jitsu is being done.
Fun
Regular Jiu Jitsu training is not easy. It will push your limits and test your fortitude. But at the same time it must be fun.
Enjoy the ride – the ups and downs, the good days and bad days. Persevere and push forwards always with a smile on your face and you will find that you appreciate the hard days as much as you enjoy the good days.
Offering BJJ classes for adults and kids, both gi and no gi, Atomic Jiu Jitsu Brisbane is the place to train in Mount Gravatt, Brisbane.
